Creating Creatives 2

I love creating images that are edgy and different. Just about anyone, with the right settings and conditions, can take a pretty picture. I like creating images that make people really stop and take notice. That is what art is all about after all, isn't it? Photographers, models, Hair and make up artist, everyone in the industry can be considered artists and with art there is no perfect, there is no completion. There is always room for improvement. As an artist I try to constantly break boundaries and push my limits. I would like to encourage everyone to do the same. After all wouldn't the world pretty boring and dull if there weren't people thinking outside the box? If everything was and looked the same? And I guess, to a degree, that is what I'm trying to accomplish with my creative concept images. It helps a lot to have a great inspirational team to help me do this too, from the models I use and of course my make up artist Griffin Shields.

Griffin is such a trooper. More often the not I come up with some crazy, semi-elaborate idea, bring it to her and she just looks at me like I'm crazy. "I'm not sure I can do this?" "How do am I supposed to get pop cans to stay in someone hair?" I am constantly challenging her. But Griffin never breaks under the pressure. She always rises to the challenge and comes out with a beautiful execution on what ever insane idea I toss at her. To be truthful, there are times where I myself am unsure of how one of my schemes is going to turn out and doubt that the results be how I've desired. Sometimes things don't work out and sometimes, although it end result may not be how I envisioned it to be, its even better. And I guess that's a good way to look at life too. Things don't always work as planned, but it would a boring existence if you never tried.

Our last session of creative concept images started off with a whirl wind of obstacles. Our first model of the day had to cancel due to a medical emergency. After scrambling for a good 45 minutes for a replacement, we thought it would best to Griffin as the model instead wasting time trying to find someone when in the end we might not be able to. It was only when we started to get ready for our candy themed shoot that we realized... we were missing many important things for our shoot and had to rush back out town to get these items. But the way I look at it is, sometimes its through chaos that the most beautiful things come to be. And I feel that's what happened that day.

So we started the sessions with Griffin's Candied Goddess shoot. The images were intended to be innocent and child like, but we noticed as the session went on the images became more and more... adult lol. We went with it and laughed the whole time!

Our next model was Julianna. And here was challenge number 1 for Griffin that day. Our idea for Julianna was a white trash princesses shoot, all decked out in underwear and robes and pop cans in her hair to replace rollers and pink bubble gum. However you get pop cans to stay in ones hair is beyond me, but somehow Griffin made it work. We used a back drop and a bedroom as a background. Normally I try to stay away from the bedroom setting, unless photographing a boudoir sessions (boudoir does mean bedroom so without a bed, its really just a room) But I felt that there was enough detail going on with the pop cans and all that it would okay and would be a standard posed on the bed image.

Next up was Maili. Griffin and I turned her into a pretty as pink doll. I had spent the night before making these cute little newspaper roses hair clips for the shoot. We wrapped her shoulders in pin tulle, which was very itchy and uncomfortable. I had to stop several times during the shoot to free poor Maili's hair from being tangled inside the pink and sparkle laced tulle. We also used a mousse to add a touch of pink in her hair along with the roses. That took a few days to wash out. For something that was supposed to simple poor Maili took some mild abuse. Oh things we do for beautiful images. Thanks Maili for being such a trooper.

Our final shoot of the day we used two models. Drea is has done some boudoir modeling for me in the past and Garret is a new male model making his mark in the modeling world. For them our idea was dark tango, love and hate, push and pull. With dramatic eye make up our setting was an orchard down the street from my home. The trees where bare and twisted. It looked fantastic up against the dark make up and Drea's bright red dress, who of course brought her A game with her drama and acting background! At one point we spotted and area that looked like the ground was covered with berries or dead leaves. Oh no, the ground was riddled with rotten apples. You would think that would have stopped us but nope, we marched on through the rows of narrow trees, heels, shoes and even my reflector were covered in mushy apple slush, but the images we got from that location were beautiful!

So enjoy the images below! I have lots more planned and to come! There are several projects I would love to start working on now that the weather is becoming nice and warm!

Frequently Asked Questions about Boudoir.

Boudoir.  It's exciting It's inciting And it's confusing and intimating all at the same time!  If you are thinking about a boudoir I'm sure you have some pretty big questions on the top of your head. That's fine. I mean it's not everyday you are standing half naked in front of a perfect stranger.  So you have questions... I've got answers. Q: Boudoir. Pornography. What’s the difference? A: Well for starters Boudoir is suggestive, while porn is... well you know. And you don’t have to be complete nude or revel anything at all when it comes to boudoir photographs. One of the most important things about being sexy is being confident. If you feel that way wearing jeans, by all means, wear jeans! Or a button down men’s dress shirt. Sure why not? Classy, suggestive, and flirty. Q: Can you Photoshop my images? A: If you would like to have say, stretch marks, a scar, that unwanted, embarrassing tattoo from when you were 16

Choosing Your Location, Fall Addition

It's that time of year again where the weather changes and vibrant hues surround us. So looking for a place to take photos may be different than a place in the summer or winter that you enjoyed. Choosing a location that best suits you and your comfort level is important. It is good to pick somewhere that will make your session memorable and pleasing for you. Find a place that fits well with your personality and gets you to enjoy your experience. Some of my favorite places in the Fall time are Morningstar Mill, Malcolmson Eco Park both in St Catharines. As well as Firemans Park in Niagara Falls, McFarland House in Niagara on the Lake, and Balls Falls in Vineland.  Morningstar Mills is a heritage site located at Decew Falls. This site features a beautiful working mill rebuilt in 1872 and is surrounded with trees and water. It is a good naturalistic place to go, especially in the fall time when there are numerous colors all around you and a beautifully built mill overlooking some wate

Paint War Engagement Session

My best friend Ashlee is getting married in October. She and her girlfriend wanted some engagement photos done for their wedding website. Being my best friend I wanted to do something very special and unique for her photos. I have seen some very cute engagement sessions done with chalk fights. I decide to kick it up a notch. Why not switch out chalk for paint! Brighter colors, high energy and loads of fun, just like my friend and her girlfriend. We picked up some paint and water guns from the dollar store and found an awesome location for our shoot. The result was awesome! Pops of bright color, boisterous zeal and above all, highly entertaining! Made me kind of wish I had partaken in the fun myself, beyond the camera.   I love experimenting with different concepts and different ideas when it comes to my photography. I am so thankful to have such great friends who are willing be victims for my wild photographic endeavors. I am also so happy to have to gotten s
